Ancient Egypt Yelling At Cat Eating Rice
Many Americans probably never heard of the revenge killing that took place at a town called Rüsselsheim, Germany. In this town, German civilians killed eight unarmed U.S. Army Air Corp crew members that were shot down in another part of Germany. They happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and were responsible for a previous bombing raid targeting a German Luftwaffe airfield. Unfortunately the town of Rüsselsheim was recently bombed and a group of civilians thought they were responsible. On August 24th, 1944 an American B-24 was shot down while attacking a Luftwaffe airfield near Hanover. Their aircraft was hit with Flak and was badly damaged. They had to make an emergency crash landing due to their altitude. It was a low level bombing mission and they were not high enough to use their parachutes. A crew of nine servicemen were onboard. Soon after they crash landed, they where captured and taken to the nearest town of Greven to be interrogated. One of the crew was injured badly due to shrapnel from Flak. The Germans soldiers that captured them, decided that this injured man should go to the hospital in Münster. That left eight remaining crew members. After a short interrogation the eight went to the train station for transportation to a Prisoner of War camp that was located near Frankfurt am Main. Traveling by rail took longer than normal due to Allied bombing raids. Due to damaged railroad tracks, the train has to stop several times to repair sections of track that was damaged. During their travels another bombing raid targeting a factory was hit in the town of Rüsselsheim. They were very upset and thought that the bomber crew was responsible the destruction of their town. The two women started yelling “Schlage sie zu Tode! Sie haben unsere Häuser zerstört!”( Beat them to death! They have destroyed our houses!) and started to throw bricks at them Other towns people saw this and were also upset and started to do the same. The two Wehrmacht soldiers unslung their weapons and tried to stop the towns people, but did not shoot their rifles and were overcome by the crowd and beat up but not killed. Hammers, bricks and rocks on were used, killing the bomber crew. The U.S. Army heard about what happened, and in May 1945 after the war they arrest 11 towns people. They decided to hold a trial and it became the first criminal war trial in Germany. This is before the Nuremberg trials. The result of the trial was the following. Seven hanged, including the two women that started the riot. Three were given 30 year sentences hard labor and one was found innocent of all the charges.
