To be honest I hated it when my salary was published in the local newspaper as well as when a fellow firefighter had a minor skirmish with the law that made front page news. You cannot fight certain things but you can circumvent much of it if you and the majority of your colleagues act professionally on a daily basis. It’s hard to explain but competence and integrity always come to light behind the headlines. Beyond the local politics involving wages and benefits there are higher levels of politics that are usually done through the unions. In the case of my profession we have the IAFF which is a union that I’d almost die for because of the efforts that they put forth to promote firefighters. They are clearly on the side ofbtheir members with their comprehensive involvement in every aspect of our job from legislative actions and especially firefighter wellness and health and safety. That becomes political too in a much higher level with states and the federal government. They represent us with dignity and class and are a very effective advocate for all of us. Achieving that success involves a long standing history of political support for candidates which is politics at the basic level. If you’ve ever noticed you will see the yellow and black IAFF signs behind the candidates that we support as a union. What’s great about the IAFF is that they don’t tell us how to vote, but they merely tell us which candidate they feel represents our interests the best. That’s their job but they also realize that firefighters have a mindset of their own and thereby may have other issues which will result in them supporting another candidate. I’m a Republican but I’m actually a middle of the road guy who feels that selective judgement on the political level is the biggest threat that democracy faces. It’s funny but I’ve carried signs at the Democratic Debate at St. Anselm’s College for candidates I didn’t vote for and some that I did. So yeah politics are interwoven into the fabric of firehouse politics more than you might believe. Furthermore there are plenty of different opinions on the national level but we all tend to agree on the local level which impacts us more directly. They do this by clearing brush, creating firebreaks, using natural obstacles and laying down fire retardent on areas at risk of catching fire. Then they let the fire burn itself out weather permitting. Sometimes the weather helps to contain the fire and sometimes it helps the fire grow into a firestorm. High winds can help a fire break out of it’s containment zone and heavy rains which are expected this week tend to help contain and end the fire, but also bring other risks like mudslides. This is why when they talk about wildfires, they tend to saying things like 25% contained, which means they have managed to stop the fire spreading beyond it’s boundary in about 25% of the total area of the fire.
